I82 - Task 3 Worksheet on Disease/Medical procedure
The disease or ailment I have chosen to research is carpal tunnel syndrome. This disease/ailment affects the nervous system the most. The effects of this disease/ailment on the human body are as follows:
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a median entrapment neuropathy. It causes paresthesia, pain, numbness, and several other symptoms. At night, pain and numbness shoots through the forearm, thumb, index, long, and radial half of the ring finger. It can be triggered by genetic mutations, diabetes, obesity, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, and heavy manual work or vibrating tools. In addition, it can also be triggered by light but repetitive tasks. CTS can also lead to long term nerve damage.
The treatments for this disease/ailments are as follows:
There are ways to relieve and even cure CTS. One way is by wearing a wrist brace or splint. This will keep the wrist straight and lessen the pain induced by CTS. Another way to lessen the effects of CTS is by doing physiotherapy. By doing small wrist exercises, the wrist will hurt less. However, it does not work as well as a wrist splint or brace. Corticosteroids are another way to lessen the effects of CTS. Steroids are injected into the wrist to dull the pain. Again this is only used for short periods of time until other treatment options are found. The last known way of treatment is by getting surgery. The carpal tunnel ligament is released to relieve the wrist from any pain. This procedure is only recommended when there is constant pain.
